Introduction to Genocide Chronicles

The legal definition of genocide was coined in 1948 by the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of the Genocide (CPPCG). Article 2 of this convention defines genocide as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethical, racial, or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group." Because of the insistence of Joseph Stalin, this definition of genocide under international law does not include political groups. However, because of its scope, genocide requires central planning and an internal machinery to implement. This makes genocide the quintessential state crime, as only a government has the resources to carry out such a scheme of destruction.

In this blog I plan to amalgamate information (articles, stories etc) about various genocides in the history of mankind. I will try to update the blog at least once every two weeks.

Here it is important to note that at times part of the blog may be biased because history as we all know is biased -- it depends on which side you view the story / events / circumstances from.

Please feel free to give me your feedback -- suggestions / criticism all welcome.
